MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.,
April 29, 2008 – Cavium
Networks, a leading provider of highly integrated
semiconductor products that enable intelligent
processing for networking, communications, storage,
and security applications, today introduced the
new OCTEON XL Express accelerator card family.
The OCTEON XL Express is an industry-leading multi-function
accelerator card that integrates hardware acceleration
for TCP, compression, de-duplication, security
and IO virtualization and is fully C and C++ programmable.
This new family of accelerators extends the reach
of Cavium Networks’ high-performance acceleration
capabilities to a wide range of new and emerging
PCI-Express based systems designed for storage
appliances, L4-L7 switches, and wireless infrastructure
applications.
Cavium Networks’ OCTEON XL Express Accelerators
are on display at the Interop conference in
Las Vegas, Nevada April 29 - May 1 in Cavium
Networks’ booth #663.
Comprehensive Acceleration for Next
Generation Data Processing Requirements
Next Generation Data center servers, storage
systems and intelligent networking systems require
advanced hardware acceleration and virtualized
peripherals with standard PCI-Express connectivity
and form factors. Today networking and storage
vendors and IT administrators have to plug-in
multiple accelerator cards and interface cards
to meet their acceleration needs of TCP, compression/decompression,
de-duplication, security and IO virtualization.
Adding multiple accelerators to a system is
infeasible due to power and space constraints
and the fragmented software required to support
multiple accelerators. To meet the needs of
networking and storage vendors and IT administrators,
Cavium Networks’ OCTEON XL Express accelerator
family integrates multiple acceleration functions
into a single, compact form factor.
OCTEON XL Express Features
The new OCTEON XL Express accelerators incorporate
the leading OCTEON Plus CN55XX and CN57XX Multicore
MIPS64 processors. The accelerators are available
in a full-height, half-length, single-slot form-factor,
and provide a standard PCIe x8 edge connector.
The cards support the OCTEON Plus CN55XX 6-core
through CN57XX 12-core Multicore MIPS64 processors
with integrated HW acceleration for packet processing,
Quality of Service, TCP, compression/decompression,
encryption/decryption, iSCSI, RAID 5, 6 and
De-Duplication.
Key additional features of the OCTEON XL Express
Accelerator Cards Include:
• Dual ECC-protected Mini-DIMM DDR2 sockets
providing up to 4GB capacity
• Four RJ-45 or Four SFP interfaces for
either copper or fiber GbE connectivity options
• Very low power consumption
• Compact flash socket for dense on-board
storage
OCTEON XL Express accelerators provide industry-leading
performance of 1.2 GB/s of compression and decompression.
The card also offers up to 2GB/s for Data de-duplication,
a performance level not offered by any other
competing solution. Additionally, it includes
support for the latest security protocols such
as IEEE 1619 data-at-rest security (AES-XTS)
and Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC).

Software Support
The OCTEON XL Express family is supported by
a rich set of x86 host system software, including
a portable PCI-e driver with standard LINUX
support and C-language API’s for offloading
compression/decompression, RAID, De-Duplication,
SSL, TCP, and crypto processing. For users looking
to add proprietary processing features to the
OCTEON XL Express accelerators, a full software
development kit for OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64
processors is available. Cavium Networks’
Software Development Kit includes Linux, GNU
tool-chain, GDB development environment and
popular third party tool-chain and development
support that enables thousands of C/C++ applications
to be easily ported. For fast-path and data-plane
applications OCTEON also supports a C-language,
high-performance simple executive. Additionally,
Cavium Networks provides APIs or production
quality software toolkits for IPsec, iSCSI,
SSL, SRTP, TCP and RAID. OCTEON is also supported
by third-party standard operating systems including
Linux®, WindRiver® Linux or VxWorks®,
and MontaVista® Linux.
